A bear’s eye view of you.

Surprising a bear in the wild can provoke an attack. Take actions to make your presence known by using an air horn, talking loudly, clapping, singing or occasionally yelling out. Shaking a can partially full of rocks can also be helpful. If you see a bear and it has not noticed you, quietly back away. Always have bear spray close at hand.

Protective mothers can be vicious.

Positioning yourself between a mother bear and her cubs, or coming too close to them, can elicit a very aggressive and vicious response. The best defense is bear avoidance by proactively making your presence known. Use an air horn, talk loudly, sing, yell out, or rattle a can partially full of rocks
